The territory of the United States doubled during his presidency (The Louisiana Purchase). Jefferson also proposed the Louisiana Government Bill to govern the territory.

During Jefferson’s administration, he made the determined attempt to prevent the importinng of slaves. He created new law to ban the trade. However, it did not have the desired effect. At a later date, in the 1830’s, ban on the slave trade came into force.
During the Barbary War, Jefferson decided to send the country’s naval and marine forces into Tripoli. Consequently, the U.S. Marines won the first Barbary War. The small gunboats that were used during the attacks got the name “jeffs” (Peterson 1998, 212).
